[TC-I Call to Action]: Wantrapreneur business plan competition for social entrepreneurs

Villgro (formerly Rural Innovations Network) is sponsoring a new business plan competition for social entrepreneurs called Wantrapreneur.  The competition is specifically aimed at innovations and solutions that benefit the rural poor.

Wantrapreneur is all about identifying ideas that have the potential to transform lives and nurturing them to become market-ready products and services.

The competition is open to Indian citizens and the categories include:

  • Agriculture – Start up
  • Agriculture – Early Growth
  • Energy/ Water – Start up
  • Energy / Water – Early Growth

The winners will win at least 12 lakh in cash and will also gain access to mentoring and networking opportunities.  Business plans are due by October 31, 2009.  Winners will be unveiled at Villgro’s “Unconvention” conference, to be held in Chennai in December.


Shital Shah

Shital’s family immigrated from India when she was only four years old, but her heart and soul still remain there. She went on to graduate from Northwestern University and returned to India as an Indicorps fellow. She completed her Master of Public Administration from New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service, specializing in International Development. In the past few years, she has been involved with the Washington Leadership Program, InSPIRE (a summer program for South Asian youth), and internships with Acumen Fund, the UN, Oxfam International, the World Bank, and New Visions for Public Schools. She currently works on savings, technology, and mobile banking projects in South Asia with ShoreBank International.
